5 Misconceptions About PMS + Our Menstrual Cycles

there’s a lot of outdated info floating around about periods + PMS — and it can leave women feeling confused, frustrated, or like something’s “wrong” with them. these are the 5 of the most common myths + i want to replace them with facts that will empower.

PMS is just women being emotional

this one’s old + tired. PMS isn’t about being overly sensitive — it’s about real hormonal changes that are occurring in the body. estrogen + progesterone levels shift in the days leading up to a period, which can affect mood, energy, sleep, + more.

WE’RE NOT DRAMATIC— it’s biology.

women are just smaller versions of men.

not even like, one percent. women + men are different on a hormonal level. while men follow a 24-hour hormone cycle, women have a 28(ish) day cycle that affects everything from brain chemistry to metabolism. that means women experience natural shifts in mood, energy, and focus throughout the month — this is not something to downplay + fight against, it’s something to embrace + work with.

everyone’s period symptoms are the same.

no one size fits all. some women have cramps, others feel exhausted, some feel more anxious or irritable, and some barely feel anything at all. every body is different + each menstrual cycle can even vary month to month. there are tons of factors that play into your symptoms + intensity of them.

severe period pain is normal.

mild discomfort can be common — but pain that interferes with daily life is not “just part of being a woman.” there could be more at play, and that possibility deserves to be taken seriously + thoroughly investigated.

you can’t do much about PMS — it just happens.

actually, there’s a lot you can do. nutrition, movement, stress management + sleep all play a big role in how your body handles hormone changes. once you understand your cycle, you can sync your lifestyle with it + start feeling way more balanced.

your period isn’t something to dread or hide — it’s a powerful signal from your body. the more we understand it, the better we can support our hormones, our energy + overall health.
